Derell Hobdy’s story is one of passion, dedication, and a lifelong love for gospel music. Born and raised in Winnfield, Louisiana, Derell’s musical journey began in childhood at Greater Neal’s Temple COGIC, where he’s been playing drums since the age of three. After graduating from Winnfield Senior High School, he attended Grambling State University and became a proud member of the world-famous Tiger Marching Band, serving as the electrifying Hypeman during the halftime shows for the 1999 and 2000 seasons.
Derell’s vibrant voice quickly became a staple in the community, first as the gospel voice on 91.5 KGRM from 1998 to 2003, where he inspired listeners on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings, and also energized the airwaves with hip-hop and R&B on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. His talent for connecting with audiences extended to hosting the Flying Clouds Half Hour from 1997 until 2016, after which he launched the beloved Flava Show on 92.1, bringing the best in gospel music to the region.
From 2004 to 2006, and continuing in sales and voiceovers until this year, Derell contributed his talents to KAYT 88.1 in Alexandria, Louisiana. As a concert host, he’s had the honor of sharing the stage with gospel legends such as Hezekiah Walker, John P. Kee, Harvey Watkins Jr., the Canton Spirituals, and Lisa Knowles Smith & the Brown Singers, to name just a few. Through it all, gospel music has remained the heartbeat of Derell’s life—a passion nurtured since childhood and shared generously with his community. Guided by his motto, “Put God first, and you’ll never go last,” Derell Hobdy continues to inspire, uplift, and unite audiences through the power of music and faith.
